Alice In Wonderland – another hit for 3D movies!

Alice In Wonderland made an amazing start at the box office this week, raking in just over $14 million!  Its success proves that 3D is the future for film-making.  This bodes well for upcoming 3D films, ‘Clash of the Titans’ and the two final Harry Potter films.  While critics might not have raved about Tim Burton’s Alice the same way they did about ‘Avatar’, moviegoers seemed to have thought differently.  New Nicholas Sparks weepie, ‘Dear … read more »

Sandra Bullock takes the Top spot!

Sandra Bullock’s ‘The Blind Side’ made a fantastic start to its box office run.  All of the Top Ten have had a slow week but have had solid takings over the weeks.  Over the next few weeks, big movies such as ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Clash of The Titans’ and ‘Green Zone’ will hit the screens.  It will be interesting to see how they do.

Leo’s on top again!

Leonardo DiCaprio does it again.  His teaming with Martin Scorsese has proved profitable, both critically and in the box office.  Their new film, ‘Shutter Island’, had a healthy opening week earning nearly $4 million.  The diversity of the Top Ten doesn’t seem to have stopped them from raking in at the box office. Nearly all of them, with the exception of debut movies, ‘From Paris With Love’ and ‘The Hurt Locker’, earned above $3 million.  … read more »

Valentine’s Day – Hit or Miss? – A Review

VALENTINE’S DAY (PG-13)
Director: Garry Marshall
Starring:  Nearly every A-lister and up-and-comer in Hollywood at the moment!
And therein lies the problem with ‘Valentine’s Day’.  The story touches on the lives and loves of a group of individuals on Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles – each somehow connected to the other.  Think ‘Love Actually’ times three!!  But that’s where the trouble begins.  There were just too many stars and too many stories and too much schmaltz!  I was … read more »

‘Avatar’ loses its Number One spot!

At last!!  ‘Avatar’ has lost its number one placing to the A-list packed romantic comedy, ‘Valentine’s Day’.  ‘Avatar’ held the top spot for over two months and it has now surpassed $100 million in national box office takings.  Worldwide, the movie has earned over $2.3 billion.  Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins’ ‘The Wolfman’ had a great opening week and so did the teen flick, ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’.  Both movies also received … read more »

Top Ten Movies of the Week

Except for ‘Avatar’, last week in the box office was a slow one.  No other film broke the $2 million mark in takings.  Mel Gibson’s return film, ‘Edge of Darkness’ came pretty close though.  But the dark subject matter of a father on a road of vengeance after seeing his daughter murdered, isn’t an easy watch.  Speaking of dark, Ethan Hawke’s vampire flick, ‘Daybreakers’, didn’t do too badly.  Filmed in Australia, it’s about a vampire-run … read more »

The 2010 Oscar Nominations

Well, colour us blue and call us Na’vi. The nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards have just been announced in LA and, while James Cameron’s Avatar – the biggest film of all time – bagged nine nominations in total, it hasn’t had it all its own way (see the full list of nominees below).
Cameron’s epic has been nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, and picked up a raft of technical nominations, but it was … read more »

Check out the Top Ten Movies of the Week!

There’s not a lot of change in the box office this week.  ‘Avatar’ and ‘Tooth Fairy’ kept their places and are both still doing really well with movie goers.  Clint Eastwood’s new directorial flick, ‘Invictus’ had a great debut this week coming in at Number 3.  The movie stars Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as the Springbok’s (South Africa’s Rugby Union team) captain, Francois Pienaar.  Next week sees no major releases but … read more »

Spiderman 4 bites the dust!

Well, you didn’t need spider-sense to see this one coming. After a week dogged by rumours that Sam Raimi was at loggerheads with Sony over Spider-Man 4, the studio has just announced that they are shelving the Raimi-directed Spider-Man franchise, with a view to completely rebooting the character in 2012.
The reboot, which will be scripted by Jamie Vanderbilt, will return Peter Parker to his high school/drippy teen origins, as he comes into very close contact … read more »

‘Tooth Fairy’ surprises at the box office!!

It looks like there’s no stopping ‘Avatar’s’ domination of the box office any time soon!!  But the big surprise this week is ‘The Rock’s’ new movie, ‘Tooth Fairy’, coming in at Number 2!  I guess the story of ice hockey player sentenced to become the tooth fairy for a week resonated with movie goers.  It also stars Ashley Judd and the wonderful, Julie Andrews.  Having a good debut this week is the Aussie musical, ‘Bran … read more »
