It was a ho ho ho indeed for Hollywood last Christmas as moviegoers shattered box-office records and made the holiday weekend the biggest weekend in box office history!

The estimated $278 million in weekend box-office revenue actually broke the previous record of around $253 million created back in July 2008 which was the weekend “The Dark Knight” was released.

James Cameron’s “Avatar,” “Sherlock Holmes,” “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” and “It’s Complicated” are the top four films that contributed to making last weekend the biggest weekend in box office history.

James Cameron’s “Avatar,” led the pack earning $75 million for 20th Century Fox, according to studio estimates Sunday. In its 10 days of release, “Avatar” has apparently made $212 million domestically — and could possibly be on its way to a worldwide gross of over $1 billion!

Right behind “Avatar” is “Sherlock Holmes,” starring Robert Downey Jr. as Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective. “Sherlock Holmes,” opened with a weekend total of $65.4 million, including a record Christmas Day debut of $24.9 million.

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” which opened last Wednesday, also did well in the box office opening with $50.2 million on the weekend and $77.1 million in its five days of release. The film actually earned a remarkable $18.8 million on Wednesday alone!

Nancy Meyer’s romantic comedy “It’s Complicated,” starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin also did well in the box office as it raked in $22.1 million in its debut.

This Christmas weekend had a variety of movies genres from science-fiction to romantic comedy to family fare and to action-packed thriller which is probably why movie goers flocked to the cinemas to watch their favourite movies despite the current recession.

“That’s what fuelled this Christmas, the diversity of the films,” said box-office analyst for Hollywood.com Paul Dergarabedian. “It was like a cinematic buffet line. If you can’t find a movie that you like in the marketplace right now, you don’t like movies.”
