Calling All Trekkies!
by Jenny Aluning on May 21st, 2009 · posted in Movies · No CommentsLive long and prosper. Yup, I admit it, I’m a Trekkie! I am a proud Trekkie!! I am a geek, but if you’ll permit me to say, a particularly sexy geek. Hehe! And with the release of the 11th Star Trek movie, there was a mixed bag of excitement and trepidation. Ask any Trekkie and they’ll have a favourite series. Either it’s the original, Star Trek; The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager or Enterprise. And ask any Trekkie….we get a little territorial when we start hearing words like ‘revamp’ or ‘reboot’.
The original series was released during a time in the world where two superpowers (the US and Russia) were involved in a tense stand-off. Nobody felt particularly safe and there was always the threat that either one might push the nuclear button. That’s why the Star Trek themes of: ‘teamwork’, ‘working for the greater good’ and the thought of a future free from poverty, inequality and war was particularly seductive which resulted in generations of fans.
Director, J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, Mission Impossible III) wisely assembled a cast of semi A-list stars, perhaps realising that the real star is the franchise itself. With the film being a prequel, you don’t have to be a die-hard Trekkie to enjoy it as by all the reviews and box-office sales seem to indicate! It is an action romp! Sit down and hang on! With other Star Trek films, there is always an ethical and moral lesson running through it but with this Trek, it’s not as cerebral and like the young cast, it’s physical, emotional, sexy and alive. J
Anyway, this is a cool way to revitalise the Star Trek franchise and J.J. Abrams…you’ve earned the respect of this Trekkie!
