Fashionista of the Month for December 2013!

By: Jenny Aluning

2 months is not a long time in the overall scheme of things but it was just enough time to turn Betty Sandoval’s (StarCentral Magazine’s Fashionista of the Month for December 2013) fashion hobby into a passion into the beginnings of a successful career!  “…it was a spur of the moment kind of thing but I couldn’t be any more pleased with how it’s turned out so far!”

Betty’s fashion hobby evolved from her discovering it as a way of expressing who she was – “…I found the most happiness in putting outfits together…”  She’s also discovered how much she enjoys the variety of styles that are out there (“…every single person has a style of their own…”) and how she’s learned to appreciate all of them – “…I love seeing different combinations of patterns or colors together…”  Completely in love with the fashion era of the 90’s – “…high waisted bottoms…all assorted patterns…overalls!” – she described her own style as “bold/edgy…modern 90’s…”  Her style is also influenced by her love for music – “…I cannot live without it so I try to incorporate it into my everyday life. I listen to a lot of old school hip hop and rap (hence the street wear)…”

Recognising how much impact fashion/style has on people’s daily life, the 21-year old Long Beach, California resident, hopes that her own unique look will inspire others to not only create their own style but be confident in it.  “…I believe that confidence is something I’ve gained through what I do. I feel the most comfortable in an outfit I put together because it makes me feel good about myself…it really doesn’t matter what you’re wearing or who’s wearing it, it’s about how you wear it. Confidence is a girl’s biggest accessory…”

The rollercoaster ride of the last 2 months has cemented for our outdoor-loving fashionista the importance of having a loving, supportive family behind her.  “…I can’t thank them enough for what they do for me. I love them to death and am so grateful for their ongoing support…”  That support will be invaluable as Betty continues to build her passion into the career she dreams of.  “…I would love to become a Full Time Fashion Blogger because I enjoy every minute of it and a passion like that is hard to find…”  In addition, she also plans to attend a fashion school to explore other aspects of the industry such as fashion merchandising.  Betty’s just taken her first few steps into a bold new world, who knows how many more experiences and successes await her!

‘LIGHTNING FAST’ Round:

1.            What is the one beauty product you can’t live without?

There are so many beauty products I couldn’t live without so to pick just one would be so unfair to the others! But if I absolutely had to choose, I would say it would be my eyebrow shadow. Eyebrows are everything to me and if they are not filled in, nothing else matters.

2.            What is the most dramatic thing you’ve ever done to change your looks?

Lipstick! Definitely lipstick. I was never comfortable wearing dark lipstick up until now. I love the dark reds, burgundys and anything in between.

3.            What is in your makeup bag when you travel?

My make-up bag has very minimal things in it. I definitely need my Almay tinted lotion along with my Sephora mineral powder, my Mac eyebrow shadow and eyebrow brush, any black eyeliner I’m using at the time, Lancome STAR mascara, a light Mac bronzer for my paler days, and last but not least my Mac Diva lipstick that I cannot live without.

4.            What is the one “flaw” you wouldn’t change about yourself?

I would say that I am very selective with who I share my life with in that case I keep my guard up. It’s not that I don’t trust easy, I just rather build that trust. I’ve learned that those who stick by you are because they actually want to be there. I love that about myself because I know those who are in my life are worthy of having.

5.            Your best guilty pleasure…

After having the longest day my best guilty pleasure would be to indulge in a large pepperoni pizza with endless amounts of ranch. (This is obviously aside from shopping).
