And they said the Brits were stodgy?? Boring?? Well, tonight’s Olympics Closing Ceremony was anything but! With music spanning every generation, it was in one word, a party! Opening the show was a poignant tribute to John Lennon with children singing and signing, to his iconic hit, ‘Imagine’. In the background, a sculpture of Lennon’s face was brought together in the middle of the stadium. After that, it was fun galore! Special guests from Madness, George Michael, One Direction and Pet Shop Boys entertained the crowd before the athletes, now able to let their hair down and enjoy the Games, filed into the stadium as one. With the athletes filling the centre of the stadium, they got a close up look of artists such as Jessie J, Liam Gallagher, FatBoy Slim, Annie Lennox, Queen, The Who and many more. They were also treated to examples of British humour in the form of Eric Idle and Russell Brand. It also turned into a catwalk with a tribute to British fashion featuring Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss.

But all good things come to an end. Before we all knew it, the Olympic anthem was being sung and the Olympic flag was being lowered, off to be passed on to the mayor of Rio de Janeiro. What followed was an taste of the colourful Brazilian culture that included the samba and an appearance by soccer legend, Pele. After being declared by IOC Chairman, Jacques Rogge, as the “happy and glorious Games,” the only thing left to do was extinguish the Olympic flame. As the cauldron came together in the Opening Ceremony, it slowly unfurled with a phoenix atop it. Take That then came on stage to sing their hit ‘Rule The World’. Then slowly, sadly, the flames faded. But unlike other Olympic cauldrons, this one will not stay in its host country. Each copper petal is engraved with the name of a participating country who will have the honour of bringing it home.
