Singing loud and brash ballads is very brave – you face the possibility of total humiliation or admiration. But the risk is worth it because singing karaoke is the only time you can feel like a superstar and pretend to sing like one.
Most karaoke songs are probably bad and embarrassing but what makes them good is how you sing it and make it work. You want to score that big 100 on the counter.
The word “karaoke” originated from Japan where it means “empty orchestra” and it’s so true because you don’t need to be an Idol to get out your mic and start belting out tunes.
Karaoke is fun after a night out or at home with your Magic Mic Box System and special karaoke bars and restaurants.
The only problem is finding a suitable song from the songbook to “get it started” and pumping the room loud with (real or imaginary) applause.
Here are the top ten classic karaoke songs of all time with some funny video clips of people who went down the same path before. You’re bound to gain some fans from next time you’re out at Karaoke – just don’t get stage fright! :
10. Hit me baby one more time – Britney Spears
The pop princess’ catchy tune is popular within the karaoke scene. With the opening lyrics of the song “Oh baby, baby” you can’t go wrong with this Britney Spears’ hit. Unless you were living in a cave in the late 1990s, everyone knows the lyrics. You’ll get the room moving to this hit in no time as long as you also possess some dance moves.
9. I will survive – Gloria Gaynor
When it comes to a dramatic opening this song tops it off. The song, which featured in the 1994 film ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’, is a drag queen’s anthem. For the purposes of karaoke it’s a tune you can sing at the top of your lungs. If you’ve got a tough crowd you might just survive another round – or not.
8. Cruisin’– Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis
As part of the soundtrack from “Duets” a movie all about the world of karaoke competitions this song is the ultimate karaoke tune to sing in pairs. Whilst the movie bombed out and had negative reviews the song was a radio hit. So if you don’t want to go at it alone – share the mic and sing hand in hand.
7. Dancing Queen – ABBA
When it’s Friday night and the lights are low and you’re looking out for a place to karaoke you can’t karaoke without at least singing one ABBA song. The seventies pop classic by the Swedish music sensation is always a winner. Get your diva on!
6. All by myself – Eric Carmen
If you want to get all emotional and have the ability to belt out the high notes then by all means enter this song originally sung by Eric Carmen in 1975, into the line up. Just make sure you don’t end up all by yourself in the karaoke bar…
5. I want it that way – Backstreet Boys
Boys will be boys – gather a group of them and they suddenly transform into a boy band whenever this song plays. The song comes with dramatic arm gestures and is a sure way to getting the boys (and include the girls too) to band together.
4 I will always love you – Whitney Houston
The feature song of Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner in the movie The Bodyguard (1992) requires you to possess some soprano vocals. It’s been on the radar recently with Taiwanese boy Lin Yu Chun doing the song justice and in doing so, amazed some (shocked) viewers around the world.
3 My Heart Will Go On
Like Rose sing out to Jack far across the ocean, this song can be sung from across the room to a loved one or better yet a random stranger. The Celine Dion classic from James Cameron’s Titanic sound track is a ballad about a love long lost but always at heart – just think of poor Jack and Rose or your long lost love and the emotions will start to flow.
2 Total Eclipse of the Heart – Bonnie Tyler
This Bonny Tyler classic can do you no harm if you want to impress your karaoke crowd with dramatic vocals. The song is so bad it’s good; there’s a literal version of the music video on YouTube, which has been viewed by almost 7 million people.
1 Living on a prayer – Bon Jovi
If you’re half way through the night and want to gain some pace, Bon Jovi’s Living on a Prayer is the ultimate karaoke song. At number one on our top ten list it’s here for a reason, every time you sing this song whether it be in a pub, club or shower you just have to shout the chorus and make some noise. That’s what karaoke is all about.
